I haven't posted in a really long time. I also, I'm ashamed to say, have not been reading my friends page for the past how many months, I'm not sure. There's no way I can ever catch up. All I can say is that since Freya and my grandmother died I have been in a severe depression. I've hardly turned my computer on and when I did it was all just too overwhelming. I'm finally clawing my way out of the depression, mostly because of this little darling, Missy (at least that's her name for now)

We found her through petfinder.com, brought her home for a home visit on the 18th, and adopted her a week later. She's about a year old and the the most adorable puppy. She's a chihuahua mix of we don't know what else. It's been so long since we've had a lap dog and she is a superior lap dog. I swear we're going to have to train her as a therapy dog. She sits in any of our laps and falls asleep and it's mite near impossible not the follow her there. She has such a calming effect it's wonderful and she is a really good dog as far a behaving goes. If she gets into trouble, on short sharp noise, not even a "no" is all it takes to make her stop. She's also great fun and likes to play with toys. Her cousin Maggie spent weekend before last with us and they go along great, although Maggie sometimes looks at Missy, when the little girl wants to play, as if to say, "I'm used to hanging out with a old lady. What is this?" But they're fun to watch when Mags finally decides to play.

Okay, that's all I have to say for now.

Dark Day in History of UT
Tower by tpala

August 1st, 1966 Charles Whitman climbed the tower at the University of Texas with an arsenal and laid siege to the campus for 96 minutes, killing 16 people (including an unborn fetus) and wounding 31.

Why does this concern me?Collapse )

It was a harrowing day, one that is never forgotten and never fully understood. If you'd like to learn more, here are some good links. Morbidly I couldn't resist reading all that was in the paper yesterday.

Wikipedia's entry on Whitman

Crime Library's entry on Whitman

Austin American Statesman's narrated slide show
containing present day photographs of the locations, as well as pictures from the day (none gruesome).

Now I promise next time my post won't be depressing ;p

December 4th marked the second anniversary of my uncle-in-law's death. We went to the cemetery to pay our respects and see the headstone which had just been placed there. On the back was something which he had written about the internet. Back in the early eighties, my uncle had seen the potential of the internet and started the Meta Network and also wrote this:

We are at the beginning
of extra-ordinary history.

The technology of electronic networking
has freed us from the tyranny
of the formal hierarchy.

We are now free
to create new forms
of purposeful human systems.

Imagine the emergence of a new meta-culture.

Imagine all kinds of people everywhere
getting committed to human excellence,
... to closing the gap
between the human condition
and the human potential.

Imagine a rapidly growing movement
of “excellence activists”
that runs into, through and amongst
all kinds of existing organizations
and human communities.

And imagine all of us hooked up
with a common high tech communications system.

That's a vision that brings tears to the eyes.

This is a must read for any voter, but don't read it while you're eating, it's not good for the digestion. It's long but well forth it for hte information and insight it provides.

I voted today. There's early voting in Texas. I am so going to need sedatives on election day.
